MSI Modern 14 Review: A Light Lappy That's Good Enough

Most guys who consider MSI have in mind heavy-duty gaming laptops or thin, high-end business machines. But what if you don't need something that cumbersome or expensive?

Meet the MSI Modern 14—a thin, affordable everyday laptop for the student, office worker, or just someone who'd want to have a reliable daily driver. I've written and worked on this laptop for the past two weeks, and here's what you need to know before buying one.

Lightweight, Not Fragile
Let's get one thing out of the way: this is not a clunky, unwieldy machine. While MSI doesn't call it "ultra-thin," it's thin and light—easy to shove into a bag and carry around all day. At 1.5kg, it's perfect for daily travel, coffee shop use, or carrying to work.

The 14-inch screen is equally well balanced as a mix between portability and usability, ideally suited to work without feeling stuffy.

Whispers and Shadows (No Jet Engine to Speak Of)
Surely the biggest shock? Just how silently it operates.

Even when pushed to 100% performance mode for long stretches of time, the fan is hardly audible. That's because of the U-series Intel processors (which are available in i3, i5, and i7 varieties), which are designed to use less power and generate less heat—without sacrificing performance on routine tasks.

So, yes, you can work at a library or coffee shop without making it sound like you're going to take off with a drone.

CPU First, Upgrades Later
Tip: When buying this laptop, spend a bit more on the CPU up front (do the i7 if you can). Why? Because the RAM and SSD can be upgraded.

Don't spend more money on higher specs up front but instead buy the base model. Upgrade your memory and storage later as necessary. It's incredibly easy—you just have to take out the bottom plate and add what you need.

Design: Slept & Professional
The Modern 14 comes in two colors:

Platinum Gray

Urban Silver

I tested the Platinum Gray, and it's elegant without being tacky. The understated MSI logo gives it a clean, professional look. The matte finish is thin but scratchy—so do get a sleeve.

Keyboard & Trackpad: Surprisingly Good
Trackpad:
Responsive and spacious

Supports gestures and multi-touch

Not MacBook-level, but good (7/10)
Keyboard:
Surprisingly comfortable

Quiet, tactile feedback

White backlit, no RGB

Compromised layout due to size (page up/down keys and arrow keys are fiddly)

It is a couple of days to become accustomed to, but otherwise it's a decent keyboard given—particularly for a 14-inch laptop.

Build Quality: Plastic, but Solid
Yes, the Modern 14 is plastic, but it is firmly constructed and solid. There is little flex on the keyboard deck, and the hinge is unyielding.

And here's a nice flourish: the screen folds flat completely. There's even a mode in which you can mirror the screen for someone sitting across from you—a clever option for meetings or collaborative work.

Webcam & Audio: Weaknesses, Not Strong
Let's face it: the webcam is terrible, even in well-lit rooms. If video calls are a big part of your working or studying life, grab an external webcam.

Sound is also rather middling. The 2-watt speakers are fine, but don't expect to be impressed. Think Zoom sessions and daily YouTube—not movie ambience.

A silver lining: There's actually a camera kill switch for your peace of mind. A thoughtful gesture for pros.

Ports Galore
Unlike most new laptops (hello, Apple), the MSI Modern 14 comes with a surplus of ports:

3x USB-A (USB 3.1 Gen 1)

1x USB-C (USB 3.2 Gen 2) with power delivery and display out

HDMI port

Full-size Ethernet port

Combo audio jack

SD card reader (not super useful, but hey—it's there)

Which means it's a genuine plug-and-play device—no dongles required.

Display: Easy on the Eyes
The 14-inch IPS panel is sharp, has great viewing angles, and a 60Hz refresh rate—perfect for general use, media consumption, and light gaming.

No, it will not wow you with color or brightness, but at the price? It is well within reason.

Battery Life & Performance
Battery life is decent, about 7 to 8 hours of mixed use—perfect for a day at school or in meetings.

Specs (depending on configuration) are:

Up to 64GB DDR4 RAM (upgradable)

PCIe Gen 4 NVMe SSD support

Intel Iris Xe integrated graphics

Just don't expect gaming on ultra settings—but light gaming, editing, streaming, and productivity? This laptop can handle it.

Final Verdict: Worth It?
Here's the TL;DR:

Pros:
Lightweight and portable

Quiet and efficient operation

Great upgradeability

Plenty of ports

Good build for a plastic body

Affordable

Cons:
Average webcam and audio

Keyboard layout takes getting used to

Screen is not ultra-bright nor color-accurate (but close enough)

Would I recommend it?
Absolutely—for students, remote workers, or anyone who just wants a solid, affordable laptop that just works.

If you're buying smart (start with a good CPU, add the rest later), the MSI Modern 14 is a value-packed everyday laptop that checks all the right boxes.
