Amazfit T-Rex 3 Review: Is This the Best Rugged Smartwatch for Fitness Enthusiasts?
Lately, when I'm writing about smartwatches—anything Huawei, really—a commenter inevitably pops up singing Amazfit praises. So I thought I'd see what all the fuss is about. I got myself an Amazfit T-Rex 3, strapped it on my wrist (after a bit of an effort), and put it through its paces for the past three weeks.
As a fitness aficionado—CrossFit, running, even adventure racing—I've been on the hunt for a more durable Apple Watch alternative. And the T-Rex 3? It has me almost forgetting I've worn one.
Here's what you need to know.
First Impressions & Design
The T-Rex 3 is built like a tank. With a thick 48mm octagonal case, it's clearly going for the G-Shock aesthetic—but smarter. The orange silicone strap on mine stands out (other colors are offered), and the watch looks ready for the untamed.
Despite the rugged look, it's surprisingly customizable. Any regular 22mm strap will fit—no proprietary nonsense here. You can swap out the style whenever you please.
Build Quality
Display: 1.5" AMOLED, with Gorilla Glass 3 protection
Bezel: Stainless steel for added durability
Main Body: Reinforced plastic, but it feels solid and premium
Touchscreen: Responsive, even in super sunny conditions (2,000 nits of brightness)
This thing's been through workouts, trails, and general clumsiness—and I haven't scratched it yet. Knock on wood.
Buttons That Make Sense
As cool as the touchscreen is, physical buttons matter more when you're running, cycling, or hiking—especially when things get sweaty or muddy. The T-Rex 3 has four textured, tactile navigation buttons that feel just right.
Outdoor-Ready Features
This watch was built for the outdoors. Here's what you get:
Operating temps: Down to -30°C (-22°F)
Water resistance: Up to 45 meters (no, it's not for scuba diving)
Sensors: Barometer, compass, GPS, altimeter, and air pressure sensors
Haven't had the opportunity to get lost yet (and that's a statement), but it's comforting knowing the tools are available if I do. Bonus: offline maps feature is completely free and absurdly useful.
Battery Life
A major selling point: up to 3 weeks of battery life on one charge.
Realistically, with GPS and Bluetooth running on a daily basis, I averaged around 16 days, which still destroys the Apple Watch's 16-hour average.
Charging Time: 2 hours to full
Minor inconvenience if you're like me and like to charge during short showers. It's not a dealbreaker, but something to note.
Smart Features
Of course, it tracks steps, calories, and heart rate—but it does more:
170+ sports modes (yes, including chess and skydiving)
Recovery coaching & AI training for marathons or fitness goals
Blood oxygen, body temperature, heart rate, and even cycle tracking
Message notifications & calendar reminders
Bluetooth sensor integration (e.g., HR monitors, cycling gear)
And a surprise: it has a built-in AI assistant (through ChatGPT 4.0). You can ask it to look up workouts or answer messages. It has a mic but no speaker, so voice calls aren't possible.
Gym Tested
I ran the T-Rex 3 through my standard weightlifting routine and overall, it held up well. It's a little bulky—so if you have smaller wrists like mine, it might interfere with certain lifts. However, it doesn't feel as obtrusive as something like the Garmin Fenix.
Rep Tracking Accuracy
Sometimes off by one or two reps, which is pretty average for smartwatches
Great at recording heart rate and distance—where it really counts
And if you're the type of person who uses external monitors or cycling gear, the T-Rex 3 plays nice with Bluetooth accessories.
Final Verdict: Is It Worth It?
The Amazfit T-Rex 3 is not a Garmin-killer—but it's not meant to be. It's a highly capable, rugged, feature-rich fitness smartwatch that gives you most of what you need for a fraction of the cost.
What It Does Well:
Long battery life
Rugged build and outdoor readiness
Tons of fitness features
Excellent display and sunlight readability
AI-powered smart assistant
What It's Lacking:
No call speaker
Bulk can chafe smaller wrists
Rep counting can be more accurate
Long charge time (relative to use patterns)
If you're a fitness enthusiast who wants a tough, rugged smartwatch without the Garmin price tag, the T-Rex 3 is a solid option.
