GPT-5 Backlash: Why Users Are Begging for GPT-4o’s Return

When “Upgrades” Don’t Feel Like Upgrades
Since AI went mainstream, we’ve all been used to one thing: every new model is better than the last. Faster, smarter, more capable — right?
Well, the launch of ChatGPT-5 has thrown a bit of a curveball. For the first time, many users are saying, “Wait… I liked the old one better.”
When GPT-4o was around, people described it as warm, conversational, and even comforting. Now, with GPT-5, a growing chorus says the AI feels colder, more robotic, and far less emotionally engaging.
And then there’s the credit limits. GPT-5 reportedly uses up your available messages faster, meaning even paying customers can’t ask as many questions as they used to.

OpenAI Responds
The backlash was loud enough that OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, publicly acknowledged it. He admitted many users had emotional connections with GPT-4o and that retiring it so abruptly wasn’t ideal.
As a result, OpenAI has promised to improve GPT-5’s usability and keep GPT-4o available to Plus users for now — a move aimed at softening the transition.
A Shift in How AI Evolves
This whole situation shows something fascinating: AI doesn’t always progress in a straight, “better every time” line. Each model is trained differently, with different priorities — and that means sometimes a newer model can actually feel like a step back for certain users.
In other words, we’ve entered an era where “the latest” doesn’t necessarily mean “the greatest.”
What’s your take? Have you tried GPT-5 yet? Does it feel like an improvement, or do you miss the personality of GPT-4o?
