Apple Developing New Keyboard With Display Keys To Show More Controls

Apple is looking to advance its keyboard technology by developing a system that can show different symbols depending on context. A patent application published this week by the US Patent and Trademark Office details Apple’s efforts to improve upon its existing keyboard backlighting technology, which is currently only used to make the keys visible in low light environments. The new system would feature perforations in the top and bottom layers of each key, through which backlighting could be used to illuminate different symbols and letters. In some cases, this backlighting could be provided by an array of LEDs, such as micro-LED or OLED pixels, which would allow for even greater customization and flexibility. This new technology would also allow for the use of materials like aluminum in the construction of keycaps, resulting in a keyboard that matches the appearance of the surrounding metal housing. Overall, this technology has the potential to significantly improve the functionality and appearance of future MacBook keyboards.
