The new system would feature perforations in the top and bottom layers of each key, through which backlighting could be used to illuminate different symbols and letters. In some cases, this backlighting could be provided by an array of LEDs, such as micro-LED or OLED pixels, which would allow for even greater customization and flexibility. This new technology would also allow for the use of materials like aluminum in the construction of keycaps, resulting in a keyboard that matches the appearance of the surrounding metal housing.
