SQD Mini LED: TCL's C7L and C8L
By Stefan @ WeDoTech
So… Did TCL Just Raise the Bar?
SQD Mini LED is the big talking point right now after a recent TCL event, and honestly, it did not feel like a small upgrade. Walking into it, you expect the usual TV refresh cycle. Slight improvements, maybe a bump in brightness, nothing too crazy.
But this time, SQD Mini LED TVs are pushing something a lot more noticeable. From the moment the demos started, it was clear that TCL is trying to compete much more aggressively in the premium space.

What Actually Happened Here?
The SQD Mini LED lineup was showcased through the new C7L and C8L models. These TVs introduce what TCL calls Super Quantum Dot Mini LED. It sounds like heavy marketing, but there is a real change behind it.
Instead of relying on a standard LED backlight approach, TCL combines Mini LED backlighting with a quantum dot layer for improved color filtering and precision lighting control.
The result is stronger highlights, improved color accuracy, and more vibrant visuals overall.
TCL also partnered with Bang and Olufsen to include upgraded audio across the lineup, which is something most TVs still struggle with.
What Makes SQD Mini LED Stand Out?
This is where SQD Mini LED actually delivers.
Key features include:
- Mini LED backlighting for improved contrast control
- Quantum dot layer for enhanced color accuracy
- Peak brightness of up to 3000 nits on the C7L
- Peak brightness of up to 6000 nits on the C8L
- High refresh rates up to 144Hz for smoother motion
- Bang and Olufsen tuned speakers
That brightness number is the headline feature.
At 6000 nits, the C8L pushes well beyond what most consumer TVs offer. That level of brightness makes HDR content far more impactful, especially in well-lit environments.
Combined with Mini LED dimming, this gives SQD Mini LED TVs a strong advantage in highlight detail and overall punch.
The addition of Bang and Olufsen speakers also means you are not immediately forced to upgrade your audio setup, which is a rare win in this category.

Where the SQD Mini LED Still Has Limits
Despite the impressive specs, SQD Mini LED is not perfect.
First, Mini LED still cannot match the pixel-level control of OLED. That means you may still see some blooming in high contrast scenes.
Second, extremely high brightness does not always translate to better real-world viewing. If not handled properly, it can lead to overly harsh highlights.
Third, while the audio is improved, it still will not replace a dedicated sound system for serious home theater setups.
So while SQD Mini LED pushes boundaries, it does not completely replace higher-end display technologies.

Pricing
SQD Mini LED TVs are positioned aggressively for what they offer.
Confirmed pricing:
- TCL C7L (65 inch): R19,999
- TCL C8L (75 inch): R29,999
So is it reasonable?
Yes for brightness and feature set, very reasonable No for buyers comparing to budget TVs, still expensive
Considering the brightness levels and included audio upgrades, SQD Mini LED TVs offer strong value compared to similarly specced premium TVs.
Head-to-Head: SQD Mini LED vs OLED TVs
SQD Mini LED (TCL C7L and C8L)
- Brightness: Extremely high, up to 6000 nits
- Contrast: Strong, but not perfect blacks
- Color: Enhanced via quantum dot layer
- Audio: Built-in Bang and Olufsen speakers
- Price: R19,999 to R29,999
OLED TV (Typical Mid to High-End)
- Brightness: Lower overall
- Contrast: Perfect blacks
- Color: Excellent accuracy
- Audio: Typically average
- Price: R25,000 to R50,000+
Verdict: SQD Mini LED is better for brightness and value OLED is better for contrast and cinematic quality
If you watch a lot of content in bright rooms, SQD Mini LED is a strong option. If you want perfect blacks for dark room viewing, OLED still wins.

Final Thoughts: TCL Is Not Playing Safe
SQD Mini LED shows that TCL is no longer playing it safe in the TV market.
They are pushing brightness, improving color performance, and finally addressing audio in a meaningful way.
For many people, this kind of TV is more practical than OLED, especially in real-world environments where brightness matters more than perfect blacks.
After seeing it in person, it is clear that SQD Mini LED is not just marketing hype. There is real improvement here.
