Akasa Gecko Is A SSD Cooler With A Fan, But Why?

Akasa has just released their brand new Gecko Cooler, their first active cooler for M.2 SSDs. This blower-style cooler is the first of its kind and is designed to reduce your SSD temperatures by a whopping 58%. The cooler is compatible with any 2280 M.2 SSD and features a steel bracket with aluminum heatsink, topped with a 50 x 50 x 15mm fan. Installation is said to be easy and when installed, the top of the device is 72.53mm above the motherboard. Akasa has provided a comparison chart showing the temperature difference between a stressed SSD without thermal solution, which reached around 80 degrees Celsius, and an SSD cooled with the Gecko, which remained under 40 degrees Celsius. With this new cooler, your M.2 SSDs will run cooler and more efficiently.

The Akasa Gecko Cooler has a reputation for being noisy, but according to the manufacturer’s specifications, the 50mm fan produces a maximum of 29dB noise as it runs at 3,000 RPM, with a 3.98 CFM airflow and 8.2 mm-H2O air pressure. This active cooler is well built and comes with a selection of accessories for fitting. It includes a steel bracket, a thermal pad for the M.2 SSD, and another thermal pad for the 2280 form factor drive. Although current PCIe Gen 4.0 and Gen 5.0 M.2 SSDs don’t require anything more than a modest heatsink to prevent throttling, the arrival of PCIe 5.0 SSDs is expected soon. Pricing and availability for the Akasa Gecko Cooler have yet to be announced, but its passive Gecko Pro counterpart is available for $8, so this active cooler should not be too expensive.
