It looks like the Russian invasion of Ukraine is having a ripple effect on the global technology industry. Yesterday, a Russian publication reported that China has decided to ban the export of its indigenous processors to Russia. This comes after U.S. chip companies, including Advanced Micro Devices, Inc (AMD), Intel Corporation and NVIDIA Corporation, halted their sales in Russia due to American sanctions against the country.
The sanctions were put in place in response to Russia’s aggression in Ukraine and are designed to prevent the flow of technology to the country if the products are to be used by either the Russian government, its military or any entities associated with the two. Now, it appears that China has joined the U.S. in limiting the technology products that can make their way inside the Russian border. According to a single report from the Kommersant, the Chinese government has decided to stop the supply of locally manufactured Loongson chips to Russia. These chips are among the most advanced that are currently produced in China. It remains to be seen how this decision will affect the Russian technology industry and the global tech market as a whole.
Loongson Technology Corporation Ltd., a Beijing-based company that has been designing products since 2001, has recently released its latest chips. These chips are built with a 12-nanometer process node, three generations behind Intel and AMD’s latest 7-nanometer process node. Despite this, Loongson’s upcoming 6000 series chips have been benchmarked to match AMD’s Zen 3 products in terms of performance. AMD has since moved on to its Zen 4 lineup, announced in November 2021.
The Chinese government has imposed a ban on Loongson products, as well as products from other countries. Despite this, Loongson products have been tested in Russia and have met the requirements. However, Intel products remain the preferred choice due to their availability all over the world. Motherboards with Loongson chips are still available for order inside Russia.
