Quick Summary: HUAWEI MateBook D16 2024 12th Gen Core i5 16GB + 512GB was not made for gamers so it’s not priced like one, but being more than capable of handling anything you throw it’s way with a perfectly sized screen, powerful enough for seem-less multitasking, fast charging and exceptional build quality it will not only keep up with any lifestyle, but fit in anywhere just as easily.

What does the general laptop user need…they need a quality, sturdy product they can trust, day to day, that delivers a high performing product that doesn’t kill the battery by 10am and is not priced on gaming laptop levels. That’s where Huawei comes in with it’s D16 range off laptops, and the i5 version just hits the spot…its everything it should be, for anyone who needs it.

At a glance the D16 looks sleek and solid in a full Mystic Silver Aluminium body with minimum body flex, expecting it to be on the weighty side only to lift it with surprising ease, almost a feather weight at 1.68kg compared to the industry average off 2.5kg for similarly sized laptops. One of the best perks to this laptop is opening it to find a 16’ bezel-less screen with a 90% screen to body ratio, finished in matte to ensure a distraction-less experience the glare of a shiny screen can bring, perfect for the student in a coffee shop, the workaholic finishing off that project in a empty boardroom or the quick data sheet fix at a family gathering…yeah yeah, we’ve all been there.

More than enough power…

But what really matters is on the inside…right, and at the heart of the Matebook D16 lies the high-performance 12th Gen Intel Core i5-12450H processor, capable off almost matching it’s i9 version in in simple single thread tasks but lacking a bit when it comes to more processing intensive tasks, but the quick creation of thumbnails for your YouTube channel or making sure that presentation is just the right amount of ‘WoW’ falls definitely within the i5’s scope of work. Adding to that performance bonus is a fast charging laptop with incredible power efficiency ratings, giving you 11 to 15 hours of battery freedom, depending on what you use your MateBook D16 for, and when the time comes, the 65W fast charger, via a Type-C port will let you carry on without a glitch!

And so we slide into one of the few drawbacks both the i9 and i5 version live with, not enough ports of the type-C kind, the MateBook D16 comes with a single USB type-C gen 3.2 port, two USB type-A ports, one being a 3.2, 1st Gen while the other is USB 2.0 for some reason. What they do have is a 3.2mm dual headphone jack for audio, which is AWESOME, and an HDMI 2.0 for display options. I suggest a multiport adapter with a ethernet port and some few extra type-C ports as the only type-C port, is used for charging…

Let’s get back to the D16’s very capable screen tough, with 60Hz of refresh rate, only the experienced gamer will find something to complain about and colours are vivid with 300 nits of brightness that will illuminate any situation you can throw at this beauty of a screen, oh and did I mention the ‘In-plane switching’ or IPS monitor, which leverages liquid crystals aligned in parallel to produce rich colours that produces 100% sRGB colourspace coverage, ensuring accurate colour correction on your projects and and a vivid movie experience when your trying to unwind after a long day.

At the end of the day, when comparing the i9 to the i5 Intel processor there will inevitably be quite of a difference…but the difference happens at the top end of the spectrum, with the high performing i5 Processor meeting expectations time and again, I’ll suggest you work on a desk or cooling stand though as the vents are located underneath the MateBook D16 and things can get quite toasty when a lot is being asked of this machine!

Lest we forget the details, let’s talk about the front facing camera. The 720p camera may not sound like much but we live in 2024 and have AI to help us out, and that is exactly what the Matebook D16 utilizes to enhance it’s video and picture taking qualities. Things like a fingerprint scanner for improved security, a boosted WiFi antenna that can connect to devices up to 270 meters away are included! Adding to all of that is Huawei’s smart office experience, that seamlessly connects and syncs with your other Huawei devices, an eco system that is really starting to impress more and more testers out there!

Conclusion

Trying to write a conclusion for the MateBook D16 i5 was quite a challenge, calling it a workhorse doesn’t really feel right, it’s to good for that, although it can definitely play the part, calling it a processing machine would be reserved for the i9 variant so I’ll rather say this…it’s more than adequate in every way, affordable, everyday, task completing warrior that can do way more than you initially thought.
