It seems that Samsung is preparing to release a foldable laptop with a 17.3-inch OLED display in 2023. The company was originally planning to release the device this year, but has reportedly postponed the launch for unknown reasons. It’s worth noting that HP has also pushed back the release of its own 17-inch laptop with a foldable LG display until next year.
The foldable OLED panels used in these laptops are quite expensive, which could be a factor in the delay. For example, the recently released Asus ZenBook 17 Fold features a foldable 17-inch screen supplied by BOE and is priced at $3,500 on Amazon. As a result, Asus has only ordered 10,000 panels from BOE, while HP has placed a similar order with LG.
However, if Samsung enters the foldable laptop market with its own device, the starting price may be lower due to the company sourcing the panel from its own subsidiary, the world’s largest OLED display maker. In fact, Samsung’s projections for OLED laptop display orders have increased to 8.5 million for 2023, up from about 6 million for this year.
When folded, the first Samsung laptop with a foldable 17.3-inch OLED screen will have the largest remaining screen real estate at 13.3 inches diagonal. In comparison, HP’s upcoming device will fold down to an 11-inch screen, while the Asus ZenBook 17 Fold offers a 12.6-inch screen and the ThinkPad X1 Fold Gen 2 has a 12-inch screen when closed.
