MSI A850GL — PCIe-5 Ready Power, at a practical price
By Stefan @ WeDoTech
Summarized Verdict: Its a buy and here's why:
The MSI A850GL simply gives you what you need: reliable power that can handle transient load spikes, all the connectors you need for a modern system and a price that doesn’t sting. The fact that its also fully modular makes it a very functional option for most rigs.
is it perfect? No, It can be a little on the noisy side and some of the components reflect its price tag. Will most people notice? I doubt it
If you want a 850W ATX 3.0 PSU that says what it does on the box and doesn't cost a fortune, the MSI A850GL is a pretty solid buy. But if absolute silence or super-premium internals are more important, then maybe look at some higher-end Gold/Platinum units from Seasonic or Corsair.
Either way, the MSI A850GL proves that modern GPU‑ready power doesn’t need to be expensive, You just need to know that you’re going to be sacrificing something.

A Practical Choice for Modern GPUs
if you're building a PC in 2025, odds are you want a reliable, PCIe‑5 ready power supply without spending a fortune, and while cheaping out on your PSU is a massive no-go, the MSI A850GL ticks almost all my boxes. and not just mine either, a quick google search will show that most reviewers agree. It’s competitively priced, Gets rid of those ugly GPU adapters, and is 80+ gold certified, but its also not all great news we've also noticed some noise and component-quality caveats worth knowing before you decide whether or not the MSI MAG A850GL PCIE5 deserves a spot in your next build.
Out of the Box
its a pretty standard ATX3.0 power supply, there's no fancy screen or pointless RGB, but it is fully modular. a nice touch is that all of the cables are flat making cable management a little easier. It also has the new 12VHPWR connector meaning you can get rid of those ugly power adapters if you're running a newer GPU.
its a straightforward, ATX 3.0 power supply with all the connectors you need and none of the unnecessary frills.

Main Specs worth highlighting:
ATX 3.0 Design
The MSI A850GL is an ATX 3.0 Power supply, but what does that actually mean? other than the 12VHPWR connector, it also has something called "transient load requirements" meaning it can handle short, sharp power spikes over the rated 850 watts of power supply, which is actually pretty important for modern GPUs.
Gold Efficiency
While not amazingly efficient, it is Gold-rated, meaning it turns at least 87–90% of the electricity it draws from the wall into usable power for your computer. not wasting too much while not being as expensive as a titanium or platinum rated PSU.
Stable Power Delivery
Multiple reviewers that ran lab tests reported good voltage regulation and that the single +12V rail can deliver almost the entire 850W. this is exactly what you want for demanding systems.
Competitive Pricing
The A850GL’s strongest trait is its value. Compared to more "premium" options like the Seasonic PRIME series or Corsair's RMx SHIFT, it all the modern tech at a price that I think makes more sense to people who would rather invest the extra bit of money into bumping actual performance.
The A850GL does have some negatives, well one negative
It's a little loud
Scrolling through Amazon and Reddit reviews, the most consistently mentioned downside to this GPU is fan noise, the fan curve is a tad more aggressive than what you’ll find on some of the higher-end Gold or Platinum rated power supplies. Now I do think its not terrible, its definitely not a jet-engine, but it is noticeable especially under heavy loads.
So if you're trying to build a ultra quiet system, this is not your PSU.

Does the MSI A850GL make sense
Overall I'd say that the MSI A850GL is a very practical choice, it's not as quiet, or as premium as some of the top tier options, but I'll argue that for the price it doesn't need to be. It's one of the most affordable and well‑rounded ATX 3.0 units currently on the market from a name brand that I actually trust with my PC.
